KWAN UM SCHOOL OF ZEN - POLAND

KWAN UM SCHOOL OF ZEN

Founded by Zen Master Seung Sahn

The Kwan Um School of Zen originates from the Korean Buddhist Order of Chogye Zen. The founding Master is Zen Master Seung Sahn or Dae Soen SA Nim 'Dae' being a Korean title of respect). He is the 78th Patriarch in this tradition. 30 years ago he left Korea and went to the U.S. and with the help of some of his American students and Korean friends started a Zen Centre in Providence, which today is the KUSZ Head Temple for the U.S.

The Kwan Um School of Zen's practice , based on Zen Master Seung Sahn's Teaching, consists of zen sitting, chanting, bowing and personal interviews (kong-an teaching) with a qualified Teacher from our School.

Our Teachers are those who have received Dharma Transmission from Dae Soen Sa Nim and become Zen Masters or have received 'inka' and become Ji Do Poep Sa Nims, which means they can teach kong-ans.

We have had Zen Schools since 1978, when DSSN was first invited to Poland. The Head Temple (Warsaw Zen Centre) and Main School office are situated in Falenica, Warsaw. We have Zen Centres and Zen groups throughout Poland.

Warsaw Zen Centre in Falenica is the biggest in Europe, has the longest tradition and thanks to a newly built Dharma Hall is the only European Centre that can cater for lengthy retreats on a large scale. Each year Winter and Summer Kyol Che are held as well as a special seven day retreat in December. Besides Polish students, these retreats are well attended by Zen students from all over Europe and further afar.

The Kwan Um School of Zen is also a member of the Polish Union of Buddhists which represents Buddhists and Buddhism in Poland. We are registered at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, being an officialy recognized religios organization.
